Stylin' Sumatra, p. 4
Just wanted to let your readers know that Lake Toba in Medan, North
Sumatra, Indonesia, is beautiful and worth visiting. I recommend
staying in the small town of Tuk-Tuk on Samosir Island, in the middle
of the lake, where all the restaurants and several cottages are
located. Regular public boat transfers depart every half hour, at
Rp3, 000 per person. We stayed in Carolina's Cottage, the most stylish
place around (Rp2, 700-10, 000). Our room had a balcony overlooking
the lake, a bathtub and a hot shower. The dining area is fantastic,
as you can sit there and enjoy the mountains and the lake.
Hiring a motorbike
is the best way to get around (Rp230, 000 for four days). In Tomok,
bargain for batiks and handicrafts in the market. In Semanindo,
go to the museum and see the Batak dance show. In Pangururan, visit
the hot springs.
You have
many choices of nice little restaurants that offer Indonesian food,
pizzas, rosti and guacamole crackers. If you dare, you can try the
magic mushrooms they sell in the restaurants and cook with your
pizza or add in your soup or omelet.
In the evenings,
take a stroll and enjoy the cool weather, but don't forget the mosquito
repellent. Bring your favorite book, bathing suit and friends.
