'Real' Laotian food is, of course, found only at little food stalls -- places where the Laotians themselves eat. If you are looking for something more upmarket, however, the Kua Lao is highly recommended and has a good performance of traditional music and dance.

It is worth to see a hundred of monks walking in the morning in order to receive food from commoners.

At this time (February 2003) many road construction works ongoing. So Luangprabang is a quite dusty place. May be next autumn it will be better.

Going to Laos was truly incredible. I think it is one place still mostly untouched by outside influences. Very laid back. Lots of dirt roads. Many Buddist Monks wandering around.

I visited Bangkok and Chiang Mai in Thailand, and Luang Prabang in Laos. Luang Prabang was my favorite destination of the three. I spent three days here, visiting the Pak Ou caves (an peaceful, panoramic adventure by river boat), the majestic Kuang Si Waterfalls, and the Ban Phanom weaving village. We also spent time in town visiting markets, temples, conversing with Buddhist monks, other tourists, and eating at incredible restaurants. All the food was wonderful, even at the humblest of roadside food vendors. The Hmong handicraft village was very interesting as well.
This small town is loaded with subtle charms... French-inspired architecture, tropical foliage and fruits, countless riverside gardens, young children playing on sidewalks, Buddhist monks walking the streets with umbrellas over their heads to shield themselves from the warm sun, roosters crowing, and everywhere the friendly residents greeting with a warm "Sabaydii".
Shopping here is a treat, and there are many bargains to be found on beautifully hand-crafted items such as paper lanterns, silk and cotton items, Hmong Pandau stitchery, gold & silver jewelry, wood carvings.

If you want to get away from the nervous and noisy life of modern big cities, Luang Prabang is a perfect destination. A small town at the junction of two rivers with plenty of temples, small houses of various local and colonial styles, Luang Prabang offers a trip back in time of a few decades to the individual traveller who does not need the spectacular to recharge his or her batteries. The Laotians are kind, friendly and tolerant (also when driving), prices are low for Westerns, Laotian food is excellent and you feel totally secure. No beggars and no aggressive sales attitude on the local markets. Hiking excursions into the tropical forests surrounding Luang Prabang allow you to explore the extraordinary landscape.
With direct flights from Bangkok, Luang Prabang is now easy to get to, visas are obtained on arrival and the number of tourists is still pleasantly low despite the fact that Luang Prabang has been declared World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
If you have already been to Angkor in Cambodia, Luang Prabang should be quite high on your list of destinations in that part of the world.

Luang Prabang is a wonderful place - good restaurants and easier to get good coffee and cakes than places like Hanoi and Dalat. Will be interesting to see how the place looks when all the restoration work is finished.
