M Quelch 28 June 2002
Stayed at  Asian Pavilion Hotel - Vientiane, Laos.
Cave de chateux, excellent french restaurant with set and a la carte menu. Set menu very good value, a la carte excellent, expensive for Laos but very good value compared to anywhere else. Took hotel city tour, driver very friendly, had as long as we wanted at all sights. Buddha Park was interesting, take a torch to climb up through the "pumpkin" monument. Everywhere within easy walking distance, any longer distance used hotel transport.

Stayed at  Asian Pavilion Hotel - Vientiane, Laos.
Enjoyed a quick look at the city. Had an excellent fish dinner at The Lao Plaza Hotel. Found all the shopkeepers very helpful and friendly.

Stayed at  Settha Palace Hotel - Vientiane, Laos.
Vientiane is not a happening place...we enjoyed the fact that it was very laid back. It is very good value to eat out, and the people are very friendly. We did not see many exciting sights but if you have already visited other asian countries then you will have seen much better temples and architecture. As an example we would compare it with a small thai town on the outskirts of Bangkok. We were expecting it to be more stylish and the architecture to be of note. A good place to visit for a couple of days.

V Candra dewi 03 June 2002
Stayed at  Novotel Vientiane - Vientiane, Laos.
The hotel shuttle was excellent. At night they drive us (eventhough it was a couple only) to the restaurant and ask us what time we wanted to be picked up. That was a great service. Places to go in Vientiane was not much, we prefer to go to Vieng Vang/Luang Prabang instead. Inside Vientiane, the best to go around is using the bicycle, so that u can enjoy the seen more and relaxly go around the city, beside time flies fast enough when your intention is to relax. the lime/lemon juices are excellent there, or should I say in general the juices are excellent. Getting a bus to go outside Laos is not difficult at all. Eventhough its not like bangkok, but Laos is still a place to shop with bargain!! Although dont expect to get a nice dress made in laos, vietnam is still much better.

Stayed at  Muang Luang Hotel - Luang Prabang, Laos.
Nobody will miss Luang Prabang during a Laos- tour. We were one of the only persons, travelling by own car, rented in Vientiane (this must be planned, 8 hours to Luang Prabang through the mountains, but only recommended for ex-perienced drivers ) Donīīt miss the upper sections of Kuang Si waterfall. Good great and cosy wooden terrace-restaurant over the Nam Khan river behind Phousi- mountain, not mentioned in the most guide-books (forgot the name )under a roof of reed.

Luang Prabang is definitely a place to visit.

Stayed at  Villa Santi Resort - Luang Prabang, Laos.
Luang Prabang is exquisitely tranquil.

F Quinn 05 May 2002
Stayed at  Calao Inn, Le - Luang Prabang, Laos.
A trip to Xiang Si waterfall is a must. Scramble to the top and swim in the rock pools (stick to the trail to the left of the falls). Take a trip by boat up or down the Mekong and watch daily life along the riverbank. Climb up Phou Si to see the sunset..get there early, this is a popular evening excursion!

Stayed at  Villa Santi Resort - Luang Prabang, Laos.
Just to add a few points to other reviews:
- Hiring a bicycle is thoroughly recommended, as this is a safe and cheap way to get around at all times of day and night.
- Food quality was variable, and the best guide seemed to be the number of local people eating in a particular place. We liked the vegetarian restaurant a few doors down from the Villa Santi. The river fish can taste rather strong - reminiscent of cat food.
- About 50 metres downriver from the long-distance ferry pier is (or was; it may be covered by the river during the wet season) a nice place to enjoy a drink sitting on a bamboo deck overlooking the river.
- Seeing the monks collecting rice offerings in the early morning is a memorable experience. But some sensitivity is called for. One woman was following them on a bicycle and standing in their path to take photos. She then followed them back to the temple to take more shots, whereupon a monk chided her: "I am not public".
- Several people will offer river trips. We found Mr Tong Dee, next to the Auberge Calao, to be reliable and reasonable.
