Stayed at  Laguna Redang - Kuala Terengganu, Malaysia.
The snorkelling trips were great but a bigger jetty/or platform for young kids to play or feed the fishes would be ideal. We enjoyed the mountain trekking but would not recommend it for children younger than 5/6 years old.

The coral and ocean is quite beautiful. And you can enjoy snorkel. If you want to drink wine out of the Hotel, you can buy at the Hotel. There are several good restaurants around but they have only beer usually.

Stayed at  Berjaya Redang Beach Resort - Kuala Terengganu, Malaysia.
The hotel is located in a bay, surrounded by mountains and forest, facing north-east, that's why access to the island tracks is limited. Nevertheless the hotel is offering several hiking tours to see more of that "small" island. More spectacular are the boat-tours arround the island which you can combine with diving and snorkelling, which makes Redang Island attractive for professional divers as well as for beginners on snorkelling.

Other restaurants than as those within the hotel are far away and the way to those locations does not invite for a night-walk at all. Besides, the restaurant inside the hotel is offering great food, Malaysian as well as Japanese, Western and Intl. cuisine. My suggestion, go for the Malaysian food.

The resort's own beach was immaculate, but one cannot say the same about the rest of the island, especially the main jetty. The water in the bay was full of floating litter and flotsam. Clearly maintenance and environmental attention has not kept up with development.

Also, it was criminal to see other groups of snorkellers behaving badly e.g. even standing on coral to have their pictures taken!

We spent most of our time in the hotel since I was down with fever. My two older sons had their wonderful time at the pool.

Didn't find anything particularly interesting in Kuala Terengganu. But worth going to the Central Market if you want to shop for batik cloth or local food products. If time allows, go to Lake Kenyir, which is beautiful and the largest man-made lake in South-East Asia. Lake Kenyir is an hour's scenic drive from the city. There are two nearby golf courses, which are pretty good - Astana (a hill course) and Ibai (a Links course)

We were a little ignorant of the state being a full on "dry" Islamic state. There is much beauty there, but we felt a lot more comfortable in Kuantan.

The easiest way is to go by taxi around town.
