If you are spicy lover, try Isan food, Northeast part of Thailand. At Soi Sukhumvit 36, you can see some of restaurants there.

Excellent location on Soi 5 and walking distance to Soi 4 and the Nana attractions/skytrain etc. Always walk to the end of the road for taxis, tuk-tuk and motorcycles. Those close to the hotel will fleece you and refuse to use a meter. Drop by Starbucks, round the corner on Soi 5. Very friendly service and adjoining bookshop well stocked with English reads. O'Briens just up from Starbucks does a good all day breakfast economically. Night time, Nana Plaza always first choice.

Enjoyed the Grand Palace (although men have to wear long pants and everyone must have their feet covered) and highly recommend Maha Naga Restaurant - great food and wonderful service but a bit pricey.

The weekend market is full of good buys, a word of cautious, go there early about 0830hrs (GMT+7) to avoid the stuffy siuation when late morning set in.Taxi fares are cheap, and readily available. Visit the Suan Lum night market, it's the newest night market in Bangkok and have all the entertainment outlets under one compound.

Stayed at Chiang Mai Plaza Hotel - Chiang Mai, Thailand.

Chiang Mai Night Bazaar has become quite the tourist ripoff place. No really good prices like a few years back. It seems like they all agree on a basic inflated asking price, and will not drop below a certain ceiling. Prices are much cheaper at Chatuchak in Bangkok. Even many shops in Bangkok have lower prices! Too bad -- not like the old Chiang Mai market.

The destination, of course, was Bangkok. What's not to like? One of the most interesting cities in the world. Truly "a show with everything but Yul Brynner." Between the Skytrain and the new subway you can get almost anywhere you want to go, and so much faster than when you were limited to taxis and hours of sitting in traffic.
The Dusit Zoo is a great, low-key afternoon. It's cheap and you get to mingle with the average Thais as they take an afternoon off, usually with the kids, and stroll the zoo, interact with the animals, etc. Well worth the time. You can't go wrong if you go to Sukhumvit Soi 24 and visit the Lemon Grass restaurant. Some of the very best Thai food on the planet. There's now a Skytrain station at the mouth of the soi (It's the one past Asok going toward Thong Lo, but I forget the name). If you go to one nice place to eat during your trip, make it this one. The spicy curries are not to be missed. Take a wrap, as the only problem is that they keep the inside like a meat locker!

Stayed at Wiang Inn Hotel - Chiang Rai, Thailand.
|
Chiang Rai is modern Northern Town and a key stop-over to enter Laos, Cambodia and Myanmar. My stay was a stop-over in transit to enter Laos through Huay Xai and Wiang Inn's location was perfect as I did not have to rely on any public transport to get around and I arranged my next day trip into Laos within an hour of arriving at the Hotel.

Stayed at Tamarind Village, Chiang Mai - Chiang Mai, Thailand.

Be careful of an old Chinese man who comes up to you in street with sob story of how he was pickpocketed and even showing you his Singapore passport which I'm sure is forged. He asked for money to take train to Bangkok. He spoke in Cantonese but obviously not with Singaporean accent. We refused to give him any money & saw him later approaching another Asian tourist on his motorbike. I tried to grab his fake passport & he push me away & rode off. He is obviously a Thai Chinese conman. Wondered how many tourists he has conned.
