High season in Phuket was at around 30% of normal post Tsunami. Diving trips using Dive the World was good value as they sourced the operators and program within constraints of customer and gave discounts. Another excellent cheap way of sight seeing the island is by suzuki small truck at 800Bht/day. Just remember not much fuel is used so don't fill the tank if your only going out for the day.100Bht petrol would probaby do. White water rafting is excellent day option for novices in this activity.

The location was good for neighborhood pubs and a GREAT restaurant across the street, where we got our best meal in 3 weeks in Thailand. Check out Bourbon Street for wonderful Cajun and Thai food.

Why not take a thai cookery class - course run from either half a day to 5 days at the Landmark hotel (near Nana skytrain station). In each session you cook a 5 course meal and then get to eat it - can't be bad.

Visited the Golden Buddha temple, the Grand Palace, the Emerald Buddha and the Teakwood palace built by King Rama V. Very impressive. Had an excellent guide. The tour included lunch on a large boat. Was excellent food and wonderful ambience. Pity that Bangkok was so hot 37 deg.C. Anyway, we had a good time for the 2 days we were there.

Watch out for drivers trying to take you to Lucky Buddha, it's a total scam and someone will approach you about a jewellery 'sale'. Jim Thompson's House was a highlight of our trip and there is a cute little shop nearbywhich sells all sorts of Thai souvenirs. I bought a gong, some buddha pictures and some little Buddha figures for next to nothing.

The city of Bangkok is an exciting place with lots of things to do and see. The royal palace where most tourist decides to go first is so so…So are the major tourist shopping areas such as Patpong or Silom. If shopping was in your mind I would try the areas where the Bayoke Suites are located. I heard this from a Thai colleague of mine at work that this is the place where most shops in Patpong and Silom get their products. As far as night-life goes, check out clubs in R.C.A road. You would be surprised at how clean and nice the clubs are. It is supposed to be the top notch as far as price goes but still it is very inexpensive compared to western standards. The Hollywood Award Club nearby was amazing as well as you can get lots of live rock music. This was my fifth time in Bangkok and as always I had a wonderful time. The only thing that troubles me every time I come to Bangkok is the people who try to rip off tourists, especially cab drivers, and the polluted air. But if you want everything to go your way, why not just stay at home, right?

Take the taxi even for short distance, insist on fare meters. The tuk-tuks will bring you around in places that you do not wish to go, like jewelry shops and entertainment places, unless you really wish to visit these locations. For budget travellers, bring a pair of good walking shoes, and if possible a cotton breathing mask to help you breath easier in areas with heavy traffic. Take the sky train to Saphan Taksin station (near the river) hop down to take the tourist river cruise for 15 Baht to and another 15 Baht back. Private operators will charge somewhere like 600 Baht per person for the same criuse on a private fast long boat. Here you'll save money. Stop over at the Grand place for a visit. Wonderful place to visit and good garment shopping at the Baiyoke center. Take a cab there... it's clean, aircond and metered.

Try the lunch buffet at the Amari on soi 5 off Sukhumvit (near Nana BTS). Under US$10 and the food is very good. Not as big a selection as some of the area buffets, but the quality was better than most. Very delicious, high quality food.

Bangkok is a great city - don't miss Chatuchak weekend market for excellent shopping (get there early to avoid the crowds). If you are looking for good vegetarian thai food try 'The Whole Earth' on Lang Suan.
